For Matthew, studying abroad at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× was more than just an academic opportunity—it was a chance to immerse himself in Scotland’s rich history, breath-taking landscapes, and hey, a little bit of golf!

Coming all the way from Central Connecticut State University, where he studied for a BA in Political Science and Government, Matthew found the transition to ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× smooth, thanks to friendly locals and supportive university staff. From engaging classes to unforgettable trips, his time at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× shaped his confidence, broadened his worldview, and ignited a passion for travel.

Why did you choose to study abroad at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× (¹ú²úÂÒÂ×)? 

I have always been interested in visiting Scotland. It is an absolutely beautiful country and having just adopted an Environmental Sustainability minor in my degree, I could not think of a better place to study. 

What interested you about the course(s) you studied at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×? 

They were very collaborative and had much more of an international consideration. In the US, it seems like we focus heavily on US-centric issues and solutions. At ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×, I had the chance to look at solutions to problems from across the globe.

What attracted you to study in Edinburgh? 

Edinburgh and Scotland in general have always been a subject of fascination to me. As a fan of golf, the outdoors, and the UK in general, I felt that Edinburgh was the perfect combination. I also have a deep respect for history and Edinburgh certainly has a lot to learn from. 

What were your expectations before coming to ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×, and did your experience meet them? 

I honestly did not know what to expect. I was hoping to have the chance to meet new people and travel as much as I could. I missed out on studying abroad during the pandemic and saw this as my final chance to do so. While at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×, I took every opportunity to travel that I could. I also met some incredible people. I am grateful for every opportunity I had.  

What did you most enjoy about your course(s) at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×? Any highlights? 

I enjoyed my Negotiation course with Craig Cathcart and found his lessons very engaging.

"I felt like what was taught was very applicable to professional development. I still use the methods I learned in this course in professional and academic settings."

 

How did the teaching style at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× compare to your home university? 

I would say they were pretty similar. I appreciated the engaging and conversational atmosphere. I also appreciate the professors’ willingness to engage outside of the classroom and assist with academic growth. 

How did your lecturers support your learning during your time at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×? 

"They took the time to understand the cultural adaptation necessary. While it was not significant, I still needed time to adjust and each of my professors was more than willing to assist. Also, I appreciated the opportunity to give an international perspective in class from time to time. Conversations were always constructive and I walked out of class feeling like my worldview grew each time"

Did you face any challenges while studying abroad, and how did you overcome them? 

My grandmother passed away in April while I was preparing to finish my courses. Everyone at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× was very accommodating and helped me succeed during this tough time and the unexpected travel that accompanied it. I am very grateful for that. 

What advice would you give to future study-abroad students considering ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×? 

If you are ambivalent about studying abroad, Scotland is the perfect place in my opinion. Everyone is incredibly nice, you can experience cultural differences without feeling completely out of place, and it is an absolutely beautiful country. The staff at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× also truly care and will be there for you when you need it. Don’t be afraid and sign up. 

What was the best part of your study-abroad experience at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×? 

The amount of travelling I got to do while I was there. During long weekends and breaks, I would go abroad if time allowed. 

"In my time at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×, I had the chance to visit eight countries and see a lot of Scotland. I had the chance to see parts of the world that I never could have dreamed of and it ignited my desire to travel more."

 

How did studying at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× help you grow academically, personally, or professionally? 

I did not know anyone when I arrived in Scotland. Spending five months travelling and making friends in an unfamiliar place built my confidence and sense of self-reliance. It made me realize that having to do something alone should not be a barrier to your happiness and chance to make incredible memories.  

"This confidence has also translated into my professional life. When applying for jobs, I use my time at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× as an example of personal growth. I think employers really appreciate having that go-getter attitude and actually acting on it."

 

What’s your top tip for making the most of a study-abroad experience? 

Say yes to as much as you can and do not be afraid to do something when no one else wants to.  

How has your semester at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× influenced your academic or career goals? 

My time at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× has opened my eyes to international employment opportunities. While employment abroad is difficult to attain right now, I will certainly keep it in mind as a long-term possibility. 

What will you miss most about ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× and Edinburgh? 

I miss wandering around Edinburgh when I wanted a break from schoolwork. Regardless of the weather, I could walk around for hours, exploring new parts of the city and taking in as much as I could.

"I found Edinburgh to be incredibly peaceful. My favourite place to go would be Arthur's Seat at sunset."

Would you recommend ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× to other study-abroad students? Why? 

Easily. As I said, the professors and staff are incredibly helpful. I also think Scotland is the perfect place to familiarize yourself with international travel. I will forever appreciate my time at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ× and the people who made Scotland feel like home for the semester.
