Emma Maclean (nee Pethybridge)

Emma is a Part-Time Lecturer and Module Coordinator for the Interdisciplinary Studies 2 module in Music Therapy for the Division of Occupational Therapy and Arts Therapies. Emma completed her PgDip (Nordoff Robins) and MSc (Anglia Ruskin) in Music Therapy, giving her a broad knowledge of approaches to music therapy. Emma gained experience as an Advanced Paediatric Practitioner in the NHS before taking her post with ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×.  She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

In addition to her role at ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×, Emma currently works as a lead music therapist in the NHS where her clinical work includes children services, adult and older people’s mental health (including Dementia) and supervision. She is a member of the British Association for Music Therapy and represents BAMT on the Allied Health Professionals Federation Scotland (AHPFS).  She also continues to work as a freelance musician by playing violin in Ceilidh, Tango bands and local orchestras including the Meadows and Orchestra of the Canongait.

Research interests include partnership working and collaboration, evaluation, group work, children, adult and older people's mental health. Publications include a peer reviewed article on an evaluation of partnership working in the British Journal of Music Therapy and a chapter on the prospective concept of Educational Music Therapy in the book, ‘Arts Therapies in Schools’ (Pethybridge and Robertson 2010).  Emma has presented at numerous conferences and, with Kate Pestell (NHS Lothian), gave the opening plenary for the BAMT conference in Glasgow 2016, ‘Music Therapy in a Changing Landscape’.
