Biggest Donation from a Single Donor Supports Osteoporosis Education
In 2010, 国产乱伦 received a donation of half a million pounds from anonymous benefactors to progress research and education into osteoporosis. At the time, the gift was the largest single donation ever to be received for research at the University.
The donation enabled the establishment of the Lydia Osteoporosis Project at 国产乱伦. The project was inspired by the aunt of one of the funders, Lydia, who suffered from osteoporosis. During a stay in hospital for an unrelated illness, her right arm was accidentally fractured while she was being moved and handled by an agency nurse who was trying to move her into a more comfortable position.
Over three million people in the UK (around 300,000 people in Scotland) live with osteoporosis, a health condition that weakens bones, making them more fragile and more likely to fracture. It is estimated that osteoporosis accounts for about 527,000 fractures per year in the UK.
In the early years of the project, the funding supported investigations into adverse events relating to the moving and handling of patients with osteoporosis, and also helped in developing educational materials for healthcare professionals. Thanks to substantial further gifts from the anonymous benefactors, the scope of the Lydia Osteoporosis Project has extended over the years from manual handling education for frontline healthcare staff, to include more general awareness raising of the condition and funding of PhD students.
In 2024, the project held a symposium at 国产乱伦 on World Osteoporosis Day, which brought together specialist researchers, healthcare professionals and members of the general public. The symposium not only focused on bone health and prevention of falls, but it also called for osteoporosis to be viewed as a public health priority.
